About two years ago (half a year before before the release of MIDI Guitar 1) we had some signs that there were significant tracking improvements waiting to be picked up, somewhere in the estranged intersection of signal processing, neural networks and laws of physics. We begun development of version 2 while finishing MIDI Guitar 1.

MIDI Guitar is the worlds first low latency, polyphonic software solution, allowing you to play both chords and single notes with instant audio feedback. Traditionally guitarists have had to seek out expensive and inconvenient hardware to be able to use a guitar as a MIDI controller. MIDI Guitar removes the need for any kind of specialized. I use my Fender Squier Affinity Telecaster (my guitar) to play MIDI notes by linking it to MIDI Guitar 2 (by Jam Origin) which is a VST that converts guitar notes into MIDI notes with full polyphony aswell. This VST is linked to any VSTi or generator plugin (like Sytrus for example) and my guitar has become a synth. The signal was split in an Effects Rack with one path going through Native Instrument's Guitar Rig Pro and the other into Jam Origin's MIDI Guitar. From there the MIDI information was sent to four Instances of Arturia's Analog Lab, which were mixed independently in various combinations with the direct guitar sound, or used as solo sounds. MIDI Guitar 2 for iOS was just released on App Store. It is is now almost a 1:1 port of the desktop/VST/AU version. Tracking is very fast and more responsive and sensitive than most (hardware-) solutions which means it picks up articulations very well.

I had written some kind of manifesto on my wall. Splinter cell for pc. It was all about tracking improvements but I didn't quite know how to make sense of it at the time. In free translation and retrospect, it was something like this:
A kind of Manifesto
Jam Origin Midi Guitar 2
- Don't ever miss a single note, regardless of how fast you play, how you pick or hammer-on, pull-off or tab. Either the note is sounding or its not. And if it is there we should catch it. Music is unforgiving.
- Setup options don't help. Why do we need those setup options? Its not like our human brain has to try out and roll back different settings before it can recognize a sound. It should just work.
- Velocity is a big deal.We all love guitars for their dynamics. The MIDI domain should be no different. If velocity is wrong it's no longer a guitar.
- It's not about guitars. It's not about what type of guitar or pickups you play, not even about vibrating strings. It's is really about making sense of various forms of noise – only then it will be robust.
- Don't go with physics. It won't go with you.
